Most
music CD’s come in a plastic jewel case.
Jewel cases are made out of high impact polystyrene
and are injected moulded. They have a clear
lid and this also holds the booklet or card
which doubles as the front cover. The back
cover and spines are card.

The next most popular CD case is called a
Digipak. The digipak CD holders are also injection
moulded. However the digipak’s are also
made from good quality card.
CD albums tend to have an eye-catching front
cover with either a picture of the Artist(s)
or unusual artwork, or both. It will have
the Artist’s name and the album title.
Sometimes it has smaller pictures of the artist(s)
performing on stage. Unless special artwork,
normally the covers are printed in full colour.
The back covers tend to have good artwork
or photos, the album tracks, general and legal
information as well as barcodes, logos and
other packaging symbols.
The most common CD case is a single fold,
but box sets or digipaks can come with 3,
4, 5, 6 or 8 folds. When a case folds it needs
a locking system. Sometimes they have envelope
style closures , but most of them slip inside
a whole envelope sleeve or box. Some cases
that open out have ‘V’ mechanisms
that offer up the CD to the user. Others,
might not open like a book, but fold out in
different directions.
The
standard DVD cases are also injection moulded
and made from polypropylene (PP).
