ANTHROPOMETRICS & ERGONOMICS

ANTHROPOMETRICS

Anthropometrics is the study of human measurements.

'Anthropo' means 'human'

'Metrics' means 'measurements'

ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics is the study of product design in relationship with the user.

Some factors that are considered are:

reducing operator fatigue and discomfort
person’s relationship and interaction within work environments
Ease of use, Graphics are readable, Size, weight, shape, light, smell, temperature & noise.

If we look at an example of a jug kettle we need to think about the user.
Is the handle easy to hold? Is it comfortable? Does steam burn your hand when you pour hot water from it? Is it easy to pour when full?

The last question might lead to further ideas.
Below is a jug pouring aid to help people with arthritis:

Two very common examples of ergonomic design are the computer mouse and iphone.

These items really have to work well with the human hand!

Think of as many things as you can that you would have to consider when designing a mobile phone or touch screen gadget.
