SCALE & RATIO

Scale is written in a mathematical way called 'RATIO'

For example, if an object was drawn a fifth of the original size it would be represented as a ratio of 1:5. If an object was drawn 5 times larger it would be represented as a ratio of 5:1

A postage stamp is quite small. If I decided to draw it twice as big than its actual size, my drawing would be a ratio of 2:1

Now I have drawn my postage stamp I want to print it out half the size. This ratio would be 1:2

TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING:

A drawing is made 25 times smaller than the actual object. The ratio is?

A drawing is made 8 times larger than the actual object. The ratio is?

ENLARGEMENT GRIDS:

A good way of enlarging or reducing a drawing is by using the grid method. A clear plastic sheet with a grid drawn on it can be laid over a picture and then a larger grid (or smaller) can be drawn lightly on your page and the squares act as a guide for you to reproduce your artwork.
The trick is to draw one square at a time!
